Every new day is a new start. No matter how bad the previous day might have been, a new day is a beacon of hope,of new beginnings.A new day to start over, to resume the fight for growth, for life. It's one of my core beliefs.Like many of us,I've had my share of lousy days, days I wish would just finish so I could go to bed and hide. The dawn of the new day though, always finds me on my feet, sometimes enthusiastically, other days less so.But I make myself get out there and do what needs to be done.
It is the same with global events. There will be dark moments, when human brutality will shock to the point of numbness. It will make us wonder if we do indeed live in the year 2015 or if we have been transported to the Dark Ages. But the next day always dawns. And with it hope dawns as well. After the bloody massacre in Paris, many flooded the streets in protest, supporting the freedom to speech. No opinion, no matter how radical, should lead to murder, to avenge anyone, not even a prophet. It's just not justifiable. There are a myriad ways one can demonstrate his opposition to insults.Killing is not one of them!
In yesterday's post, I mentioned the extreme importance of education. No surprises there, as I'm a teacher. But it's so much more than an opinion held by a teacher somewhere in the world.Education is an extremely powerful tool which, when used appropriately and effectively, shapes the leaders of tomorrow.
When it is denied to the people, or a specific group of the population, like women, it is aimed as a means of oppresssion and deprivation of basic human rights, oftentimes decreasing the less privileged to the state of animals. It is even more hazardous though, when education is given as a means of brainwashing,by providing knowledge selectively. That means that students are taught what is deemed necessary to shape the working class, the ones who will not harbour any high ambitions or dreams. It is the kind of education that binds the individual to the state, not giving him wings to fly but chains on his feet.Knowledge is power. The less one possesses of it, the less dangerous he is to the almighty powers that be.Very rarely do leaders spring forth from this category of education. It allows no room for spontaneous creativity, enouragement of judgment or debating skills.Nothing too fancy.Just passive swallowing of knowledge.Mediocre education breeds mediocre and unthinking masses.
I realise I may sound too negative. It's something I strive not to be.But this is the reality.I witness it every day in the children I teach. It's disappointing but I firmly believe there is hope.A revolution can start in the classroom as well.A teacher has more power than he thinks.A motivated educator can create a new generation of thinkers and leaders.Too far-fetched you think?I don't.A bloodbath won't solve a dammned thing. It will bring about even more problems, more chaos, more despair.Educating the new generation to think, express their opinion freely and pursuing their dreams fearlessly and passionately is creating a new world.A better world for all.
Education is a subject close to my heart and I teach passionately every day.I will probably be doing it for the rest of my life.If I can make a slight difference in the life of even one of my students, it will all have been worth it.It IS worth it.
With love and light,
Happy New Year to all...may it be a year of blessings, bold innovation and tolerance for our fellow human being.Peace and love should be the main wish for this year.Having witnessed the wars in the Islamic countries the past years the only wish would be that. But it seems 2015 was to start out in the bloodiest of ways.15 people executed in cold blood.15 people dead for being part of a satyrical magazine that dared to provoke through rather controversial cartoons in some of which the prophet Muhammad was the protagonist.
So, I can accept the Muslim world was insulted. But to let this feeling of insult become a war for the taking out of the "infidels",to get to the point to take human lives in the name of a prophet who stood by the principles of love and unity, is a paradox which the history of humanity is full of. I am utterly appaled at the atrocities that have been commited by humans in the name of God or one of his prophets. The Paris shooting was a modern day example of what happens when we use God or a prophet to serve as a means to political ends or to terrorise to silence voices and opinions that don't serve us.Let's not forget the Crusades, which lasted about 500 years (from 1095 to 1571) and whose sole purpose was to "deliver the Holy Places from Mohammedan tyranny.Sounds familiar, right? The Muslim fanatics terrorise with the pretext of defending their faith, avenging the Prophet.More blood has been spilled on the soil of our planet in the name of religion than for any other cause. So many lives lost because the religious leaders had the audacity to presume to know what other nations/people ought to believe in or how they should worship God.The leaders of the various religions globally, especially the Christians and the Muslims, believe they have some God-given right to impose their beliefs on other nations, to try to convert the infidels to the true faith.
But,pray tell,WHICH is the TRUE religion? Is it Christianity?Islam?Buddhism? The various side branches of each religion perhaps or their heresies? To be honest,I never had any trust in any organised religion.Does that make me an infidel?I don't know. All I know is the facts.Organised religions brainwash, terrorise and dictate by fear how their congregation should behave. What is right and what is wrong. What is a sin and virtue by their man-made dogmas. No wonder so many people can be recruited to kill unthinkingly and ruthlessly another human being for having a different faith.Puppets is what an organised religion needs, God-fearing followers(emphasis on fearing). The more fear, the better.Jesus said"Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself",right?
So, where can this be seen in the bloodbaths we are witnessing?Even in 2015, the 21st century, when biology and technology flourish, the human race is still susceptible, if not more so, to brainwashing. It's even more dangerous now, with the speed information is racing globally. It's just a matter of seconds.God-fearing followers, can still pick up an automatic gun and execute blindly,in the name of religion- or should I say in the name of a power-hungry,dogmatic religious leader.
The one thing I always knew for sure, apart from the nauseating facts, is that God is love.I always believed in Him.He was there for me in my darkest hours. But God is Love.God is Tolerance and Empathy for your fellow human and all livingthings on this planet. It's Respect for our Mother Earth, which we continue to disrespect through our negligence.God is Love for ALL.It's not a God of fear, terrorism, dogma or tyranny or subject to people's lust for power. He can not fit into any religion because He's beyond all religions.
Education is a key factor in this matter. The way children are taught and WHAT they are taught is of vital importance.Children should be allowed to think freely about the subject of faith, God and be taught to respect other people's beliefs.Children should not be taught to be the passive recipients of doctrines and dogmas but rather be allowed to doubt, raise questions and form an opinion that belongs to them, not one that came out of a book someone wrote.
There's lots to be discussed on this subject. But I'll let it rest for today.
I'll wish all of you an amazing 2015.May this be the year when you become all you can be and more!
