Every new day is a new start. No matter how bad the previous day might have been, a new day is a beacon of hope,of new beginnings.A new day to start over, to resume the fight for growth, for life. It's one of my core beliefs.Like many of us,I've had my share of lousy days, days I wish would just finish so I could go to bed and hide. The dawn of the new day though, always finds me on my feet, sometimes enthusiastically, other days less so.But I make myself get out there and do what needs to be done.
It is the same with global events. There will be dark moments, when human brutality will shock to the point of numbness. It will make us wonder if we do indeed live in the year 2015 or if we have been transported to the Dark Ages. But the next day always dawns. And with it hope dawns as well. After the bloody massacre in Paris, many flooded the streets in protest, supporting the freedom to speech. No opinion, no matter how radical, should lead to murder, to avenge anyone, not even a prophet. It's just not justifiable. There are a myriad ways one can demonstrate his opposition to insults.Killing is not one of them!
In yesterday's post, I mentioned the extreme importance of education. No surprises there, as I'm a teacher. But it's so much more than an opinion held by a teacher somewhere in the world.Education is an extremely powerful tool which, when used appropriately and effectively, shapes the leaders of tomorrow.
When it is denied to the people, or a specific group of the population, like women, it is aimed as a means of oppresssion and deprivation of basic human rights, oftentimes decreasing the less privileged to the state of animals. It is even more hazardous though, when education is given as a means of brainwashing,by providing knowledge selectively. That means that students are taught what is deemed necessary to shape the working class, the ones who will not harbour any high ambitions or dreams. It is the kind of education that binds the individual to the state, not giving him wings to fly but chains on his feet.Knowledge is power. The less one possesses of it, the less dangerous he is to the almighty powers that be.Very rarely do leaders spring forth from this category of education. It allows no room for spontaneous creativity, enouragement of judgment or debating skills.Nothing too fancy.Just passive swallowing of knowledge.Mediocre education breeds mediocre and unthinking masses.
I realise I may sound too negative. It's something I strive not to be.But this is the reality.I witness it every day in the children I teach. It's disappointing but I firmly believe there is hope.A revolution can start in the classroom as well.A teacher has more power than he thinks.A motivated educator can create a new generation of thinkers and leaders.Too far-fetched you think?I don't.A bloodbath won't solve a dammned thing. It will bring about even more problems, more chaos, more despair.Educating the new generation to think, express their opinion freely and pursuing their dreams fearlessly and passionately is creating a new world.A better world for all.
Education is a subject close to my heart and I teach passionately every day.I will probably be doing it for the rest of my life.If I can make a slight difference in the life of even one of my students, it will all have been worth it.It IS worth it.
With love and light,
I am a passionate English teacher.Aspiring writer and speaker.I take educational matters to heart and hope to bring about some positive change in the field of education.
